To begin, I wrote the recommended fields outlined by Professor Cho (010, 020, 100, 245, 250, 260, 300, 490, 520, 650, and 700). I then created a chart on my computer; tags on the left, information on the right. Once I completed the first three tags with ease, I thought this would be easily. I had to read the two articles on Understanding MARC Records twice. With each read, I started to get a grasp with my assignment. Once I completed this assignment, my natural curiosity began to question my district's process. Do technicians actually create MARC records individually for each book? Do the technicians use the entries from The Library of Congress? Or, is it supplied through Follett Library Resources?
My Discrepancies:
My challenges was trying to find the specific information for the tags below.
Tag 650: When I compared my tag 650 to actual MARC record, I noticed more information present. There is a variety of Juvenile Fiction fields, yet no such information was presented in the book.
Tag 700: I had the most difficult understanding this tag, but noticed that The Library of Congress did not include this.
As Professor Cho provided in Chapter 2 lesson notes, [w]hile it is unnecessary to memorize the various parts of MARC, as Teacher Librarians you should be able to navigate the MARC record as it is important to find more information about an item when listed on the 'public' display of an OPAC (online public access computer). Thus, understanding (though partially) a MARC record is important when organizing your library needs; especially with finding/purchasing resources with the same theme or genre. When using a OPAC, I know understand how tag 650 links books together under the same theme (e.g. Roman Mythology -- Fiction).
